Add 1 cup grits and 1 teaspoon salt to 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until grits are thick and creamy. Stir in butter and season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Note: adjust water according to your preference.
Serve with butter, cheese, country ham slices, bacon, sausage or shrimp. Delicious for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
